Yeah, i thought it was interesting, who would think the lowly nail could have such importance but, it did once.

Considering what it took to make one lousy nail, and that all worked metal had to be imported, I can see doing that. Furniture in some parts of the country was built originally without any metal except hinges, because it was all imported and cost more than the rest of the piece.

I have heard that england forbid the american colonies from setting up any kind of major foundry operations. If correct, i can think of a couple good reasons they did this. Politics, cannons are cast in foundries and no telling where THAT could lead and 2, economic, they wanted to sell us finished metal goods to support their own industry.
For whatever reason, most early american furniture hardware was manufactured in england, i still prefer original hardware even though i realize it's most likely english.

Not offended, although it seems like an odd way to make a point. I'm sticking with my opinion, and not just because of the nails. But as James pointed out, whether it's 1850 or 1900 it makes little difference as to the value.

Yep, that's for sure! And, considering similar form chests have been built for over 1000 years, what difference does 50 years really make? My view is, not much.
