Some call this a cheese box? I think the painting is newer than the box. Lots of character. Is this Amish or a repro? The interior has old fabric & glue remnants. THANKS! :)

You didn't state the size of the box....which I think IS a cheese box....that has had some light stain applied to it.....is it 12" to 14" approximately in size??? Has the lid got a light ochre colored paint under the design painting?? MY general feeling is that it's a repro (the painting, not the cheese box), BUT someone did a nice job in trying to keep it simple in the Amish style.....I like it (but not necessarily the cheese box!!).:):):):)

Pennsylvania Dutch or something maybe but not Amish. At least not the kind we have in the midwest. They have beards and black hands and wouldn't show any leg.

The painting looks more Spanish or southern France.

That high hat for a woman reminds me of Wales. But I would expect Welsh language on Welsh folk art.

Absolutely not "Amish" decoration - as Terry mentioned, clothing is totally wrong. And the Pennsylvania "Dutch" weren't Dutch at all. They were Germans or German-speaking Swiss. And included the Mennonites, a not quite so strict religious group, focused on Lancaster, PA (the heart of Penn Dutch country.)

There were 2 large "Welsh Tracts" granted by William Penn to Welsh Baptist migrants early on - SE of Philadelphia into what became northern Delaware (the Pencader Hundred) and west out what is now called The Main Line - think Bryn Mawr. I do not know that they did this kind of decoration, though.
