any info on my Tyson & James hutch

Just wondering what we have here and the value of it... cant decide if I should sell it to my friend or keep it. Thanks so much for any information you can provide.

 

I want to mention this - I rarely ever liked to sell to friends. In fact, I would cover stuff up that I had for sale, so that they wouldn't ask about it. I never charged my friends enough for any item, as the result, they probably never appreciated it as much as they may have otherwise.

I could give you dozens of examples, but suffice to say, it's an interesting concept topic.

Your hutch is quite nice, has it been redone with brown stain or other top finish? Putting physical labor into a piece of furniture makes it more valuable to the one who did that, but possibly not nearly more valuable to someone looking to purchase it. Looks like 1900-teens and oak.

 

Good point! My friend was interested because we are in the process of doing some updates in our home, and she wanted to know if we wanted to sell it or if we were going to keep it. Actually this piece was given to us by my boyfriend's parents, who told us that it had been handed down in the family, therefore I am not sure if it has been redone.

 

Dixie, it does appear someone stained it dark brown, a rather unnatural color for this oak style furniture, if it is oak, it's hard for me to see without close ups. Our furniture members will like a closer look to see the legs and feet, the interior construction of the shelving and hinged doors. The drawer pulls appear to be replacements.

Value of brown wood furniture depends upon your area and how much your buyer would be willing to pay. HERE IS ONE THING: There's not a lot of brown wood furniture still being cranked out, but a ton has recently burned down on the west coast. I predict that in the future, practical wood furniture will be worth much more than the lows it has sunk to in today's market. I am holding on to the rest of mine for a while, to see what happens.

You have a nice raised display cabinet/bookcase ca. 1910-20. The crest is neo-Renaissance, but the piece also fits nicely with Craftsman furniture as well. I agree with Anti that someone has worked on the stain, but also keep in mind that in the early 20th century oak typically had a much darker stain than we are accustomed to after passing through the era of "honey oak." So the dark color is not as far off as one might think.

This seems like a functional piece, and the fact that it has come down through your boyfriend's family argues for keeping it. In my neck of the U.S. Midwest such a piece might go for $200-$300 at auction, and more at retail. Bookcases are one of the few antique furniture types that are still in good demand, and the prices tend to be fairly reasonable. Look at it this way: You'll never find a new bookcase with half the build quality for anywhere near the price.

If you take a look at some old oak bookcases and decide to refinish this one, then no problem. You are not at the price point where you need to worry about trying to keep the original finish, and in any case yours is altered. Use and enjoy!

Yes, thinks Ghopper covered this pretty well. Photos are VERY small, hard to tell much plus not in my area of interest but thinks 20th century is correct.
I enlarged the photo but it distorted it, not sure this is oak though.

 

Agree with a turn of the century date. Don't see bookcase but, rather, a kitchen piece. Maybe a pie safe that has had the tins replaced with glass? If glass is original, a dish cupboard.

If this information is correct, the Tyson & Jones Buggy Company of Carthage, North Carolina was well known for years for manufacture of buggies. In the mid-1920s the company was sold and the new owners tried to convert to being a furniture company but the economic depression of 1929 soon led to the end of that. There is more than one history of the company online that says basically the same thing. Since the label on this piece does not call it a buggy company, I think this piece probably dates from the few years in the late 1920s when the owners were trying to convert the product line.

Interesting, I pass Carthage NC on my way to Pinehurst, a charming little town in Moore County, population about 2000. I often stop there if I have time as there are a bunch of small old-timey antique shops on main street.

 

That sounds nice. I love visiting towns like that. Maybe someday I will again.
