Featured Isn't This Byzantine Revival?

I know I've seen this brooch (or a variation of it) many times before, but now I can't find a similar one. Any suggested keywords to look under?

I'm only concerned as I'd like to know where the market is so I have an idea to price it - I haven't a clue.

There is something stamped on the back but it's illegible to me - "SDA", "CSO"?

Thanks for any keywords or if you can tell me I'm looking in the wrong direction with Byzantine Revival.

Pretty piece! Etruscan may be another keyword to find similar.

Pinchbeck, really? I don't have a good grasp on what pinchbeck looks like, but I know folks were talking about it on another thread recently so I need to do a little digging.

@quirkygirl, etruscan's another good term to search on. I bet that would get more relevant searches.

I just want to find something somewhat comparable so I know what price range to put it at. Funny how it seems like I've seen a million of these before, and now I can find a single one that's very similar to it!

search Etruscan Revival and I think you will see pieces with affinities.

I'm no pinchbeck expert, it's a hair before my time, but it wouldn't surprise me. The design is Etruscan Revival in spades.

Here's something close. What lead me to this was another similar gold-filled brooch that they thought had "PSCo" stamped on the back - no longer available on ETSY. https://www.etsy.com/listing/520524...-gold-filled-brooch?ref=unav_listing-other-19

    Gorgeous brooch, tie.dye.
If you see a good, substantial 19th century piece decorated with granulation, it is usually Etruscan Revival. It can have filigree as well, as this brooch has.
Although the information on Illusion Jewels says Plainville made gold filled jewellery, I think this lovely is gold plated using another technique.
Gold filled has a gold content 1/20th of the total metal. It can wear away, you'll see rubbing. But it doesn't flake, like other plating techniques.
Judging from the flaky wear, this brooch has a thinner layer of gold. My bet is on electroplated, which was mostly used for gold plating, since mid 19th century.

Pinchbeck is an English gold tone alloy made of 83-93% copper, the rest zinc. It was used in English jewellery, I have never heard of American pinchbeck jewellery.
It has no gold top layer, so no flakes or other wear of gold.

    Thanks AnyJewelry!

It definitely doesn't look like gold-filled, as you said, but I couldn't remember exactly what pinchbeck is (and now that you posted that above, I remember you posted that in another thread recently).

    Thanks for the indepth information.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I just came upon this thread. I own a brooch like this. And just got it out after reading this. I had never noticed that mine has P S CO on it as well. However, it does not look exactly like the one on Illusion Jewels site. And that site describes the mark as P. S. CO. (with periods after the letters). However, the image they show does not appear to have periods after the letters. I also notice that they image they show includes letters that are askew, not in a straight line. Because of that, I think looking further would be in order.

Meanwhile, @tie.dye.cat , yours appears to me to say P S followed perhaps by the letter C, but the last letter doesn't look like an O to me...

Just FYI, I bought mine at an antique store about 5-7 years ago. I paid about $70, I think. Can't remember, but it was more than some of the online ones have sold for.

Okay, I just found this page that shows the mark on several pieces. They attribute to Plainville Stock Co. and now I will go along with that for my piece: http://imageevent.com/thejewelryring/cowpscoplainvillestockco

Thank you figtree. I need to take out the brooch and take another look at the mark.
