I went to a house call last month. Typical call - I thought - I get the all the time. "I have tons of my mother's and grandmother's jewelry." I get there and everything was bought in Chico's :(

Well, this time they had their mother's, grandmother's, great grandmother's and great great grandmothers! I was in heaven. :D:D:D:D:D

The man who called me said his sister passed away intestate and his siblings voted him executor of the estate. No one in the family wanted any of it except two or three pieces. If it were me and my families jewelry, I would have kept all the gold and silver and a lot of the costume, but that's just me.

I spent 3 days sorting through and testing the jewelry, picking what I wanted and helping them decide what to throw away, give away and what to send to auction.

I got a couple of other dealers involved, one who sells vintage and antique clothing, accessories and textiles. One who sells Wedgwood. A third who sells ink wells and misc. antiques. They were all very, very happy!

Then they asked my help with some silver because they have no idea what any of the marks mean, what is silver and what is plate. So I spent a day sorting through it all separating out the silver plate and giving them an idea of what some of the marks mean. They are having a local auction house come by to take the silver.

As I was packing up to leave the owners told me to pick out whatever I wanted in the room with the silver as a thank you because they were so grateful for the help I gave them. I chose this little bowl. The marks tell me it is by Wakley & Wheeler, sterling, London and 1892. But what was it made for? Just a nice little bowl?

And what is that square with the dot over it on the bottom? Some kind of mark??

Sorry to go on so long, but I thought you might find the story interesting :joyful:

What is a wine timbale? I googled and pretty much every one shown is taller than wide, mine is wider than tall.

I wonder if it has been repaired or someone goofed when making it,half of the lower design at the base has been cut off.

In that size and shape, it's a small sugar bowl, would have had a matching creamer - the dot would be a punched centering point, the square may be a tally-mark, probably indicating the journeyman or perhaps the chaser...

WOW, thank you so much! When I zoom in on the photos the texture in the background is the same as on mine.

I wish it had the creamer, tongs and case, what a sweet set that illustration shows :)
