I looked up everything in order to find something familiar, coming up empty. :(
And so filthy...what can I do?

Maybe the frame is hiding the signature.:(

Ive had a liittle luck brushing them off with a soft make up brush, then barely dipping a cotton ball in distilled water and wiping gently. You have to do it over and over. Pretty painting.

    Hi,
Save a little jar of your spit for a week. Keep it in the refrige. Use cotton balls do about 2 square inches at a time. It sounds horrible but it is what the Met does to clean their paintings. A group of us did 8ft tall paintings that were 2 ft wide. Total of 8 paintings. Took us about a month.

My kids will put me away in a home if I leave spit in the fridge.
They already think I've gone bonkers, lol.

Modern decorative painting and likely European in origin based on that buff colored canvas. Since this is not a fine painting, I don't think a little mild soap and water on a damp cloth can hurt this much.

So do you think it's yard sale material? If so, and say I manage to clean it up a bit, what price should I put on it?

When I spit clean a painting, I use q-tips. No need to save spit, I just leave a q-tip in my mouth while I use the previous one.

Most likely that canvas wasn't prepared with a natural base, so a barely damp paper towel probably won't hurt it. Don't rub hard. Gently go over the surface. When the damp piece shows soil, change to a clean piece. Brush it off with a brush first to loosen any dust so you won't end up with mud. A clean make-up brush will work. I also use those cheap disposable brushes.

A very pretty painting indeed!!! I did a bit of enlarging on the lower section.... wishing your image was larger to begin with....however, where the two arrows are there seems to be two suspect areas where signatures could be.....the other three boxes on the left seem to have some sort of "chatter" that look sort of like letters, but uncertain.....what I think I see in them is at least in the beginning is a "K or R", but at least might point you to where to start to try spit clean first....I'd try the right side first, just my HO!!!! Happy Cleaning!!!

Mill Cove, Thank you for the added advice,

I placed it in better lit area and looked all over the bottom area, even with the magnifying glass and see nothing. No signature.

The spit thing is for real - probably the safest most effective way you can clean that painting - one Q-tip at a time.
