GORHAM: Do you know what this mark is?

Above the Black Starr & Frost - Gorham mark is what appears to be a C and an R. Any idea what this mark means? Any ideas or suggestions? As always, TIA

14" Chippendale (I believe) Tray

 

Hotel mark? I looked up ritz carlton silver marks and it's usually spelled out but...maybe?

 

The manufacturer's mark dates from 1929 to 1940. I'm only seeing lion over crown marks for the Ritz Carlton. I like the idea though

 

It looks suspiciously like the mark of Currier and Roby.

As already suggested, made by Currier & Roby (quality stuff), retailed by Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham (1929-62).

edit: Sorry - business under the name "Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham" was 1929-40 as stated...

@Gma, I think you and Dragonfly are absolutely correct. I'm not sure I fully understand the connection between BSFG and CR.
I understand what you've said, but can't understand why the try would be made by CR and not BSFG.

I say this because I have a second, smaller - 10", tray. Same pattern BSFG mark. No CR.

Black, Starr & Frost has always been primarily a jeweler, most often acting as retailer for silver, and that didn't change during the years that Gorham owned the firm.

Trays and other holloware like yours, with that 'pie crust' edge are often named or referred to as 'Chippendale', they were produced by numerous manufacturers. If your smaller tray is identical in design to the Currier & Roby, then it was most likely also produced by them and the maker's mark was left off, if it's just similar, then it could have been made by other makers, including Gorham.

Currier & Roby produced very good quality silver, often retailed by upscale firms like Cartier, J.E. Caldwell, Shreve, Crump & Low, and others...
