Featured Hand engraved? Victorian era sword brooch.

    Picked up this amazing looking brooch today. Gold filled and it looks to be hand engraved. I believe it to be late 1800s but could be wrong. What do you guys think?

    The front is misaligned and some of the engraving is deep so the piece would have been plated.

    You're right, it is in the Aesthetic style (1860-1900), in this case late 19th century.
    I don't think it is gold-filled, but a thinner gold plating technique. Jewellery of that period is rarely gold filled.
    Gold filled has to have a gold content 1/20th of the total metal. It is better to use the term gold plated to avoid any (legal) problems.

    Ahh gotcha on the gold filled term. Very interesting! Glad to see I have a Victorian piece here, lovely item, may even wear it again!!

    Would this have been done by hand?

    Yes, it would. Some parts were probably stamped and assembled by hand.
    By all means wear it and enjoy it. Could even be in a display cabinet or something, as long as it brings a smile to your face.:)
