Please tell me what this is, and whether it's silver or not! I have no idea. I strongly suspect I was taken for a ride on this piece and another one...

    Coin measures approx 1.5in across.

    Dish is about 3.5in across.

So you'd say the coin's legit, silver, and 250-odd years old?

    Here's some information I found...

Does anybody know what level of silver would be included in the dish or coin? My guess is 800, but I'm not sure.

Could you take a picture of the mark? There is something next to Malta.

    It's a maker's mark. G.D. That's it.

I can't find G.D., but those Maltese coin dishes are usually 800.

That's what I suspected, it being European :)

European silver is often higher than 800, not all European countries accept 800 as silver, just like they don't allow 8-9-10 carat gold to be sold as gold.
Maltese silver is usually over 800 and goes up to 959, a fineness very few countries outside Europe even use.

Well to be on the safe side, I shall say it is 835 standard. I think that'll be good enough.

Catalog price is a minimum $275 for that coin, beats me why someone would ruin it by soldering it into a bowl.
I think I`ve mentioned this before, buy a Rare Earth Magnet, they are really cheap and can tell you lots of information regarding silver items.

I saw them in Maltese souvenir shops, so I think a quality souvenir.
Maltese jewelers are wonderful, beautiful crafts(wo)manship, and very reliable. You can tell they are culturally in between Italy and the Middle East, but always Maltese.
My favourite pair of earrings are big 18k gold double twisted hoops, remiscent of iron age torque jewellery, made in Valletta, Malta. I haven't managed to wear them to death yet, the quality is too good.

Thanks for the information Davy & AJ. It's a beautiful thing and a fascinating coin.

Now that I know what it is and it being genuine, I know what I shall do when I sell it :)
