I need help with this pink round covered butter dish. The closest I can find is the Pinwheel/Sierra pattern by Jeannette Glass. This is different in that, while the base is the same, the lid has what looks like a raised feather design radiating out from the handle and a garland of flowers. Thanks aarsz_adsc08557_1.jpg

Is there a lip on the bottom piece for the lid to set over and center itself?

There is a lip on the bottom. This appears to be the pinwheel lid with the Adams pattern/design added.

    Hi,
If the inside of your butter top has the pinwheel design like the bottom you have a wonderful RARE piece of glass. Only six or seven of the butters have this design. If the inside of the top is smooth it is just an Adams placed together. If it has the pinwheel design on the inside you are so lucky in finding an extremely rare piece of Depression Glass. CONGRATULATIONS.

What the heck.... I've held and seen a LOT of Jeanette glass, I have about 60+ pieces of Adam pink in the room next to me... I've never seen this. I'd almost go get it appraised if I were you, looks like an error or experimental, which are extremely rare.

These come from respected members & Glassies.....whom I take it all have big erections for your butter dish...!

I am not a Glassie....& I'm terribly sorry that I could not find for you the exact item you have & the millions of dollars that it must have sold for at the worlds most famous auction.........
but I found what I could find in reference to this type of Adams glass...and that's the best I could do !

so...take your backhanded compliment......& go find it on your own !

I think your dish is really very rare, so finding other examples may be difficult.
Reacting to Greg's excitement over your piece made me go find my book on depression glass to see what the fuss was about.

It seems that your butter is referred to as the Adams/Sierra butter. I tried to take pics of the pages in my book The Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass by Gene Florence, but I'm not how well they will be reproduced here.

While I fiddle with the re-sizing of my photos, here are some links that mention your butter (both require you to scroll about half way down)

I won't even bother trying to post the photo from the book - it's not even that clear that both patterns are on the lid when looking at the book in person. What is different, is that they show it paired with the Adams base not the Sierra base (I'm not a depression glass collector, so I don't know how important what pattern the base is) I hope you can read the text, though. Basically it states that your butter lid is so rare because when it was being made, the top half of the mold for the lid - the outside part - was the Adams mold and the bottom half of the mold (still for the lid) - the inside part - was the Sierra mold ... creating a lid with two different patterns ... one on the outside and one on the inside.

This book was from 1988 so the prices probably are no longer relevant, but you can still see the difference in the value for this piece from the others.
