Featured Petite Secretary

Hello all,

I recently found this piece from Annapolis, Maryland and knew I had a perfect use for it. I was going to leave the drawer and cylinder stained, while painting the rest. However, after getting it home, I am afraid it might be older than the seller realized, and I need to do my due diligence before I touch the finish. Any insight anyone may have about the age of this piece is greatly appreciated. If I need to take more pictures of a specific detail, please let me know. The dimensions are 42 h x 29 w x 16 d

 

Nice little oak cylinder desk. It's been refinished. I'd date it to ca. 1900.

1890s to WWI time frame.

Me personally, I wouldn't paint it. Appears to be refinished and in nice condition.

 

If you want you could use Howard's Restor-A-Finish (light oak) and then their Feed-N-Wax.
You don't need the big can. The small one will be sufficient.

I think 1900 as well because of the drawer boxes. It features the classic 3 beveled edges and a nailed back, after 1900 that was not the case.
Very attractive little desk, little being the keyword there so more desirable in my view.

 

Pretty thing, isn't it? If it were mine, and I was certain it'd been refinished before, I wouldn't paint it, but I might stain it darker. I'm partial to dark oak, with a hint of red.
