How best to clean this picture frame?

    Firstly, I'm sorry that I know absolutely nothing about antiques - so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    This picture frame belonged to my late great-grandfather. It has some superficial damage and some woodworm holes at the back.

    It's really dirty and I'm wondering how best to clean it without causing damage.

    Soft bristle brush on the gesso parts. Other surfaces can be wiped down with a damp cloth. You just don't want to get it too wet and avoid water contact with the gesso.

    Woodworm holes can be filled in using a wax crayon of the same shade or Kiwi brown tan shoe polish which is wax based.

    Thanks guys, I'll have a go over the weekend and will post up some pics of the new + improved frame.

    Knowing me, I'll probably end up totally destroying my only family heirloom!

    Hi and WELCOME, Merth! As VeryBrad suggested, you don't want to destroy the original finish in the cleaning process....it doesn't look like it needs too much!! Always nice to see new members come aboard!!!:):)
