Bought this the other day at GW. I believe it is old and authentic but is there anyway to know for sure? I cannot find another like it and I would like to list it. I know barber items are collectible, but there does not seem to be much Vegederma stuff out there. Any help determining the age of this mirror or info I should put in the title?

    TIA, Bryan

Is it safe to say this mirror is from the turn of the century

That is a hard call for me since I'm not an expert in these so without having it in the hand difficult to predict the age. There was a popular trend to reproduce Victorian and Art Nouveau items in the mid-late 20th century. It is quite worn looking which gives a suggestion of age, but could be a modern piece that just is worn.

Is the mirror's main material wood? Celluloid? I guess if it was mine and I was researching the age, I would see if there were other mirrors of the same material with a lithograph advertising glued to the back from that era. The glass looks beveled on the edge which is nice. You might not find the exact mirror, but are there any out there with advertising like this? Using the material as a keyword maybe with "advertising hand mirror" might be a place to start on google images.

    Best of luck.

It is wood and the mirror has some defects which lead me to saying it is definitely old.

I am with Lucille on this. I would be skeptical about this unless you can find something very similar. I can see someone taking an old $5.00 hand mirror and slapping facsimile advertising (or even old advertising from a magazine) on it to make it a lot more saleable. This kind of stuff shows up at auctions and flea markets all the time.

The more I look at this, the more I think the above scenario to be true. this mirror shows a good bit of wear, yet the advertising is pretty crisp and clean. I would expect a lot more wear to the advertising, particularly around the edges. You can see where the finish is gone on the mirror, yet the edge of the advertising just adjacent is completely intact.

I wouldn't trust it as far as I could throw it.
I've never seen a comparable for ANY product.
Old mirror, new but "aged" label. Maybe done 30-40 years ago, maybe less.
I think it would be a nicer piece without the much later added advert. Almost Shaker style.
