    Hey all:

We have a couple of matching children's walnut chairs that have been in the family since the very early 20th century, at least. Their purchaser passed on many decades ago.

One of the chairs is a rocker, the other a "high" chair, presumably to boost the youngster up. As I said, both are walnut, both share an abstracted "cup and cover" motif on their front legs, and both are channel caned.

I presume they were made in the U.S. midwest. Perhaps as a special order? Don't know about that. My question is: What would be the time frame for these? Also, I know chairs usually don't have alot of value, so I'm thinking $100 replacement for them?

    Thanks!!!!!! P1010191.JPG P1010193.JPG P1010194.JPG

I think that's probably correct or close enough. I like the trumpet turnings on legs, a little william & mary action there!

Ditto the above. Think a date of 1910-20 is about right for these. Certainly not common production and in walnut is also a bit unusual. 80% of the chairs you find from this period are oak with virtually all the rest in birch with a mahogany stain. Any possibility that these are birch with a walnut stain?

Thanks guys. They are solid walnut. Brad's remarks suggest to me that they were custom made as well, not that it really ups the value much. But I've never seen their like elsewhere.

Although oak was certainly coming in with a vengeance in the 1890s, the walnut made me think that decade would be more likely than the 1910s. But would the 1890s be too early for channel caning in the midwest?

Since these are not high value items, I'm just as happy with either date. Just trying to pin it down.
