    I’m presuming this is Bakelite?
Haven’t tested as I don’t seem to have much luck without simichrome.
He’s quite big at c4 inches tail to tip of wing.
1 crack across wing but it’s stable.
Clasp is a sort of rustic safety pin affair.
    Any ideas on age please?
    Thankyou :)

Thankyou INH!. Well found (as always!).
Glad mine is maroon not bright orange. It’s got exactly the same pin clasp- I’ll see if I can get some Simichrome as I’ve got several possible Bakelite bits.

I’ve just tested it with Bicarbonate of Soda - maybe OBB suggested that to me a while ago? Apologies I can’t remember who it was.
Came up yellow so I thought maybe nicotine so I’ve thoroughly washed it and this is the result. What do you think?

I found another one the same colour as mine on eBay that is described as Bakelite and from the “early part of the 20th C”.

How is the safety pin attached? If it's glued on somehow, it could be bakelite but it's doubtful since it looks molded instead of carved. If it's pressed into the plastic, it isn't by definition. Bakelite is carved and the findings attached with screws or rivets, generally. An old piece might have another fastener glued on later, but it'll never be molded into the piece. Carved bakelite has a very distinctive look, and this doesn't have it.

There is a loop in the centre of the clasp that is sunk into the material. So if a clasp has to be riveted in to Bakelite it’s definitely not that!. Every day is a learning day :). What ever this is I suspect the clasp has been sunk into it whilst still soft.
