Featured Silver Plate What Am I

    Hi all,
    My mind is mush and I'm drawing a blank on what these are:) I thought for espresso maybe, or hot cream? No parts inside them, maybe Ebony handles?
    they stand 5 1/2" to the rim, made by Oliver and Bower Sheffield
    I just noticed it also says 3/4PT on base
    any information appreciated

    Chocolate pots usually have their spouts joined to the body closer to the top. These look like those middle eastern coffee pots with the handles on the side and half way up the pot. There must be a name for the style, but I don't know what it is.

    I just realized that they're made in left-hand and right-hand versions! Ha! Clever,eh?

    And I'm having a strange day with reading. You knew the maker already. Sigh.

    And they are rather short, so maybe this is the way espresso used to be served. :oops:

    Hot water pots for adding extra hot water to the tea.

    Hi,

    I thought I would add a "chocolate note" here. The particulates in chocolate settle to the bottom, the good stuff, and the coffee grounds, the bad stuff, settle to the bottom in the differently styled pots. Could this be the reason for the locations of the spouts?

    looking around on-line, chocolate pot seems to be the winner for what people list them as, but I believe you are correct Blooey, hot water pots makes sense, they are small, thank-you:)

    Good point on stem position, it certainly makes sense!

    They're cafe-au-lait pots, mirrored so the coffee and cream could be poured at the same time...

    Should mention the general form has been used for coffee pots since at least the 18th century, continuing into modern pieces - many variants can be found online:

    While spouts can occasionally be fairly high on coffee pots, they're high on chocolate pots because when the stirrer was used, in addition to distributing the chocolate, it frothed up the milk, so the lighter beverage at the top was poured into the cup (many chocolate pots had a hole in the lid for the stirrer stick).
