Featured Brown Transferware plate - do registration marks just date the pattern?

    Hello

I picked this plate up because I love the expression on the lion. Based on the registration date I’m thinking that may have been their interpretation at the time or perhaps it was intended for children.

The plate is approx. 9 ¼” across.

I cannot find an image of the plate online and there is no other marks on the bottom. I was wondering if the pattern registration mark would approximate the age of the piece or is it limited to just when the pattern was registered. Thanks

    Wonderful lion!

Easy to look up the registration details. Interpretation of the mark can be found online. It will tell you when the pattern was registered, so the plate was probably made sometime shortly after.

That lion is priceless! Looks like human eyes on a very grumpy face. I would've bought it in a heartbeat!

I think the design date is 7th April 1870.

He's Grumpy Cat's older ... and hungrier ... brother! If you were in the UK, you could hit a registry office and see if you could track down who used that registry mark.

Posted on another site for any further info: it is Cork, Edge and Malkin; also seems to bear a strong resemblance to a Russian plate made for export to Iran (Persia).
