Or signature near impossible to photograph....
My uncle from Belgium left me this pretty little painting of a flower in a vase, I later realized it was an iris, because that's what is written on the back as well as a name (my real name is co-incidentally also Iris, so all the more suitable that I got this painting). It is quite dirty, all those years in a smoke filled livingroom did not do the colours any good.
I cannot read the signature at all and it is very hard to capture it in a picture, I tried and tried again, daylight, artificial light...
I love the frame too, which is at least 55 years old, because the man who made it died in 1962. He started his company late 1800s. It still exists today, I asked his grandson about it.
My uncle, born in 1937, grew up in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, so it might have been something from the parental home and therefore much older than 1962...
I hope somebody here has better eyes than me and can help find the name of the artist.

Wet the tip of your finger with spit and rub it over the signature. it wont hurt it and we might be able to see it better. You might have to do it a few times.

Except for the first 3 letters - Dik? - the painted and handwritten names don't even look the same.

I'm finding this one intriguing. I'm searching right now to try to find out more about H.A. TEUNISSEN SR. Looks like there is an H.A. Teunissen in the Netherlands, and he or she is some sort of doctor:

And then there is this pinterest profile by Hanneke Teunissen and they are VERY interested in artwork. It might be worth a shot to try to contact this person directly and say "did you own this painting previously"?

Your logic for searching people named Teunissen eludes me, MrNate.

    H. A.Theunissen is the guy that made the frame not the painting.

Thanks for the spit tip! I think I got it now! Derk (or sometimes he called himself Dik) Isselmann, 1890-1959 2014-07-09 06.27.12.jpg

Look at the stamp on the top right of the 3rd photo, it reads:

    H.A. Teunissen Sr.
    LIJSTENMAKER
    EN VERGULDER
    NIJMEGEN
    Waldeck Pyrmontsingel 37

I guess I was thinking H.A. Teunissen Sr. could have been the owner of the painting? The sticker could certainly be something else, but that is where my mind went.
