I got this piece off a table lot a couple of months ago. I thought it was a paperweight until last week. The 2 pieces were stuck together with some type of adhesive but I was able to finally twist them apart. The weight I felt inside the piece turned out to be a plastic bag filled with some type of gravel, sand, or possibly ashes?:confused::confused::confused: :eek::eek:

Whatever this is I don't think it is old in any way shape or form, but if the bag does hold something's ashes it had to be something very small. :wacky::wacky:

The piece is only 1 5/8" to the top, 1 1/8" to the edge of the bottom piece & 3 1/8" across side to side.

Hopefully, someone else here has seen the same thing & can help me out.:happy:

I'm not convinced the plastic bag with a twisty-tie holds ashes, but if it does it has to be from a very small animal.

If that's a cremation urn it must be to save the remains of a pet goldfish or mouse

Wow, bercrystal, I don't know what to say.
I would keep it as it is, and maybe ask a crematorium what to do?

I guess because a plastic baggie with a twisty-tie seems so unprofessional.

Please don't gross me out that some family members sat around a table & divided up cremains of a relative!

As far as the plastic bag with a twist tie, Our Gracie was cremated & when I went to pick up her ashes I was given a small carved wooden box. I finally got the courage to open the box one day to find a velvet bag inside. I could tell that there was a plastic bag inside the velvet bag but I do not know if a twist tie is involved as I have not been brave enough to look any farther. :bag::bag:

@wiscbirddog - The mental picture of someone sitting at a kitchen table using a large sterling silver serving spoon to fill each individual baggie will be stuck in my brain for a very long time. :p:rolleyes::rolleyes: :hilarious::hilarious:

@Janice Nicholls - I am surprised we did not have to do this with my son's gerbil Buzzard.:rolleyes::rolleyes: We took this thing to the vet twice while we had him. :p

The first time was because we noticed he was walking funny while he was scampering around the floor one day. My son started to cry & was all worried about him. The "official" diagnosis was possible encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) & I was given liquid antibiotics to give him 3 times a day with a TB syringe. The visit plus the meds cost about 3 to 4 times what we had paid for the gerbil in the first place.

The second time was when he was scampering around the floor & started to dart under the couch. My son grabbed his tail somehow tearing off the outer skin & fur. The poor thing was squealing in pain. Off we went to the vet again. He amputated that part of his tail, stitched him up, gave us more antibiotics with another TB syringe & sent us on our way with another appointment to get the "stitches removed". Again the appointment cost us 3 to 4 times what we paid for the thing in the first place. :jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

I will tell you that I did end up cancelling the follow-up appointment & Buzzard was buried in the backyard several years later still sporting a stubby tail with a couple of silk stitches at the tip. ;):p:happy::happy:

I will likely do what @komokwa suggested & bury the ashes. These things do sell on eBay so maybe I'll just list it as a less expensive alternative.

Oh, this has been better than the funnies thread! I have my hubbies' cremains in the plastic urn supplied by the funeral home. Inside is, believe it or not, a heavy plastic bag closed with a twist-tie. Periodically my daughter will come and remove some Dad to take on her travels with her. She leaves a pinch in special places she thinks her dad would have enjoyed, like PNC park, under the bench we sat on to watch the Cubs play in a post- season game.

I will, someday, find an urn I like and will retire the plastic one.

That is definitely cremated ashes. Possibly a pet, or a person. My auntie and my sweetheart dog both died last year and they gave my cousin a full urn with the majority of my aunt’s ashes in it, and yes, also a smaller keepsake urn with a smaller portion of ashes. The pet crematorium offered these same services for my sweetheart Nonna. $700 to cremate a 12lb chihuahua and get her ashes back. Highway robbery and exploitative, that. Because, of course, you’re going to want your sweetheart back.

I know it may sound weird, but maybe you could think of those ashes as something very special, like a diamond. Pure carbon. What you have there is precious, the foundation of life, and maybe you could consider returning them to the earth or sea, if you’re nearby, to help facilitate this being’s cycle of life and death.

And thank you, how beautifully macabre.
