Greetings, A little while back I obtain a large Currier & Ives lithograph of George Washington, hand colored in great condition for its age. Since then, I have been seeking an Abraham Lincoln to keep George company on my wall. Flash forward I bought this one which is smaller than I wanted 11” X 8”, but the price was to good to pass on so it will do until I find the perfect size I wanted. Mid 1865-6 to 1880 would be my guess. Only found one other exact print online of this one in the Lincoln collection. Two other images that are not available.

Received it yesterday and upon opening it to inspect and clean the glass there is two inscription on the back. Question, will it ever be possible to figure out who H. C. Dixon(?) is? Do you think the signature below is Richard(?) Dean? Is he known? In researching 515-180 Wabash, I did find a Wabash Ave just a few blocks from Lincolns home in Springfield Illinois. Easy to assume Lincoln had many fans there :) or possibly just a coincidence. What in your opinion might the numbers 7691(no zipcodes used until 1963) relate to? Finally, for what reason might someone write “1 week” on the back for?

I understand answers are speculative, but any help may point me in the direction I want to go.

PS, regarding the second inscription, 1968 how old was nanny? :) ;) :)
as always thank you again and again and again.

Interesting, I didn’t even consider that, thank you. The frame is definitely not a professional job as seen here, there is one nail in each corner and sloppy paint drip at ends. At first look I thought it was home made.

I appreciate your input and will try to search framers.

Dear 7691 could well be a telephone number.

Oh “Dear”:wideyed: that would explain why the “n” and “h” turn down in Dixon and Wabash, but didn’t in what I read as “Dean”.
    Thank you @Debora

so no direct descendant of James Dean can be now off the table. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

I really did think it odd, for a noticeable signature to be followed by a written last name, more fool me. :)

And 515 could be an office suite number. It does appear to be written as an afterthought.

It that is a telephone number (2 letter exchange + 4 numbers,) could help in dating framing.

Ha, I did find a suite 515 180 Wabash (5th floor) in down town Chicago, that sold voodoo-ish stuff in the 1970’s, YIKES!

This was purchased according to the seller, recently from a wealthy large over 150 yr home in an upscale estates sale in Aurora Illinois. But thats what all sellers say, :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: it did however ship from Oswego, IL

I'm sure you'd be able to track down period Chicago phone directories, perhaps even a reverse one, on line.
