This used to be my grandmas sweing box. It has a nice shape, covered with this dark brown veneer. There used to be a lock but someone filled it with wood. Any idea how old it might be?
(it's hard to take proper pictures because of the shine)

Was your grandma using this in the 1960s/70s?
In my opinion, the thickness isn't right for an older box. Too heavy.

Maybe? She's dead so I have no idea :/
Actually the wood is pretty light. Probably pine or something like that?
    Thanks!

I believe it is so thick because of the way the sides have been cut

Hmmm, flat head screws and book matched veneer on the lid. I'm thinking older.

I think the hardware has been replaced, it's a bit smal compared to the hole made for it?

Do think it has some age to it but possibly home made. Agree that the thickness of the wood is not typical for an old box, hence home made. Maybe made from molding stock. Refinished at some point when the lock was removed and filled in.

Methinking outside the box here, pardon the pun: @Matt Johnson : Your box looks like a repurposed silverware chest to me and I sell them on my site so am familiar with shapes. If fabric usually in them is removed these boxes would look very much like yours. Called schatull in som countries in Europe.

@lizjewel has a point; the lines do look like a silverware chest. I would date it to the early to mid 20th century.

With all due respect, I believe that is an India / Indonesian made box sold in the Import stores as to me, it has the home made hinges that is typical on those things. I see , or used to see, many at Ross discount store 15 years ago, but no longer see much of anything made of wood / carved wood , probably due to tree cutting / importing laws put into effect. And they always had slot type homemade screw / hinge combinations.
