I just bought a cabinet and on both sides there are softball size holes. Does anyone know what they were for?

    Hi,
Perhaps they were stereo speaker holes.

I think you're onto something Greg.
If you're going to maximise it's antique collectability you're gonna want to restore it to original condition; I'd recommend putting in a couple of five inch woofers.
I found some good ones on amazon for $17.99 a piece:

Seems odd to mount speakers on the side of cabinet. At least they're on both sides.

If stereo equipment was inside, there should be other (smaller) hole(s) for the power cord(s.) Are there?

That's a nice cabinet to ruin it by cutting holes in it for any purpose.

They were nicely routed so I'd say speakers.

The holes look like they were put there when it was made, I could be wrong, but look like they've been there a while. They are not speaker holes.

Maybe seeing more of the cabinet would help. From what little we can see it doesn't look that old.

Those are original to the cabinet, from the looks of it.

    doesn't look like speaker holes.

I am probably wrong, but it wouldn't be holes for storing pies? I would guess they would be on both sides.
