Yard sale find. 8 panels of mother of pearl (I think) alternated with 8 small faceted stones. The metal of the ring is non-magnetic. I don't have many specific questions - I think I'll take it by a jeweler to test the metal and the stones. Is this mother of pearl? Any idea on the age of this? Thanks again!

Looks like something inspired by a Jean Schlumberger bracelet.

I suspect it is gold, maybe 10kt or so. Old rings were not marked for gold content.

I don't think it's MOP. I don't see the iridescence I associate with that. But that could just be the pictures. I wonder if it could be fresh water pearl pieces. BWDIK???? is the white part rough when you rub it across your teeth?

It looks like enamel to me. Reminds me of something in the style of Hidalgo - I don't think it is actually a Hidalgo, though.

I think quirky might be right about the enamel it doesn't really feel like Pearl when I do the tooth test.

To me it looks Edwardian - Glasgow school or Vienna secession - like that.

I think the white could be shell, maybe even horn. I don't think it's enamel.

I'm voting Mother of Pearl......just has that look, although thick.....and I love the ring!!!

The swirls in the material and non high polish surface make me think some cold paint/resin, maybe a repair for damaged original mother of pearl:)

This just doesn't look painted to me:

I'm confident it's not painted the swirliness is three-dimensional inside the material... you can tell that in person better than in the pictures.

That's why I thought of another material, mother of pearl is gritty gainst edge of a front tooth :D;)

Yes... that makes sense and I hope I don't sound contradictory... the fact is I just am not 100% sure on the tooth test because they are such small pieces of material... also I don't think I've ever felt what a real pearl does feel like.

It's so hard to tell from photos. Now I'm not sure about the enamel. At first, I thought it looked too 'swirly' to be natural MoP or shell and it appeared to be pearlized enamel

but that close-up shot that moreotherstuff posted makes it look more like something that was inlaid.

Could you possibly take a couple of close-up pics of some of the different edges of the mystery material where it meets up with the metal?

I think Kyra is on the right track. There is bakelite or lucite with a 'mother of pearl' effect, just not very mop. You see it on some old fountain pens.

    Could it be mop lucite:

I will try to yes - main challenge being that the pics above are about as close as my camera will focus. I will play with angles and lighting and see if I can get more detailed shots of the edges.
