I want a federal mirror so bad I can't hardly stand it, but I'm debating if I want the traditional round/convex or a rectangular...

This mirror was at an estate sale near me so I strive out there.
I was browsing around the house and kept hearing hushed conversations. I overheard someone say, it looked like a lot of blood v in that area... Working many estate sales you hear all kinds of speculations so I thought nothing of it. A little while later I was looking over some antique post cards when I overheard the 2 people next to me mention the owners...
As it turns out the house has sat vacant for the past 30 years. Explains the conditions and molding/dampness. They go on to tell nee the owners worked for the college and were brutally murdered.. After that the son closed it up and didn't have much to do with it, til the estate sale.

Anyways, they want $250 for the mirror, but would only give me 25% off.
The neck had been broken and repaired at some point. Not a terrible repair, but your eye couldn't help but be drawn to it.

They pulled it down so I could see the back.
I couldn't help but feel I was really not getting a deal when I saw the $9.92 price written from goodwill on the back (even if it was from 30-40 years ago) :wacky:
It was paper backing, the break to the neck didn't look all the way through and the frame was of wood construction..

I took a seat across from it on the couch to study and decide if I wanted it.
One of the employees I was talking to asked what I thought..

I told him I was trying to decide if it was a revival piece or actually federal.
He said, oh no, no, no! This is old old old, actual federal.
If you bought this it would be the oldest piece in your house...

    His convincing didn't work.

Oh well, something didn't feel right.
I left without it. I just didn't want to fork out $200 for something I had to ponder so long on and I knew would be hard to get my money back out of it if I decided it wouldn't work..

How old do yall think this piece is?
Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the back.

    Hi,
I am sorry but it looks very 1930/40ish to me. I really would like to see the back of the eagle to be sure but that molding around the glass is just so so as far as I am concerned. It may be worth 200 hundred but I can see a lot better pieces for much cheaper.

They wouldnt get $200 even if it were federal. I agree with Greg age wise.

Thirded. That paint job is totally wrong; I'd say that part at least is more 50s than anything older. (I know squat about real Federal antiques, but I've seen more than my share of 50s furniture.)

    Okay, I'm not crazy.
There were 3 people in there trying to convince me, I just wasn't seeing it

I'd have laughed in their faces and offered the same $10 on the tag on the back. It's not bad, it's just not old.

Ca. 1950. Knowing what you know now, I would doubt that you would ever really be happy with it, even for $10.00. Hold out for the real thing; you'll be glad you did!
