Does anyone know when Wallace was making Melford?
I picked these up at a yard sale this morning for $1.00 for the pair.

Melford? The "similar" tradename Wallace used was Medford Silver Co. Was there something that came with these that said Wallace?

And on the strength solely of the color of the tarnish, I'd say 70's at the oldest, probably newer.

I can't really say why Replacements says "Melford - See Wallace" but they do. I wonder whether the EPWM means it was made for the British market and in Great Britain?

The 925 site has it as Wallace also?

And so does the silvercollection site?

What do you know... I always go to Rainwater's appendix of Tradenames first and she doesn't have Melford, just Medford. Now, maybe it was typo that didn't get fixed. Or maybe it came after the last update to the list. In any event, I have nothing in my library that mentions the name. But Wallace did have a Canadian sub from 45 - 64, so maybe it was their tradename.

here is a pic of one with Wallace. They are saying Wallace & Sons. Antique?

Unlikely. Wallace and Sons was the name of the US company until 1956. The Canadian sub R W Wallace and Sons, LTD lasted until 1964 when it was sold. But that mark just says Wallace.

Can't tell much from that particular picture. Can you show more?

Very reminiscent of the styles popular post WWII - 50's and forward. And more I think about the marks just saying Wallace and not R W Wallace and Son, they're probably post 1956, when the name changed to Wallace Silversmiths.

Like I said earlier - your goblets are unlikely to be older than the 70's and could be newer. That blue-black tarnish is the key - and it is almost impossible to clean off. Don't even try it. My mother had a Wm. A. Rogers coffee pot she was given as a 25th anniversary gift - early 70's. When I was getting everything ready for auction in 2011, I must have spent a whole day trying the get that stuff off the pot and finally gave up in despair. I think it must have had some kind of coating on it that kept the polish from getting good contact with the tarnish. :arghh:

Too late I tried. I have one almost clean. I must agree they are in too good of condition to be very old.

The EPWM stands for electroplated white metal. I have some smaller goblets that I was told came from the 1940s.
