    Hi,
Last week my Soc Sec check was deposited as usual. 10 mins ago I went to write some checks and I was checking my account on line and my SS check was missing. I called the bank and was informed that my check was returned due to the fact last last month I was reported to have died. They would have returned last months check also but there was not enough in the account to cover it so they were giving my estate a chance to move the money. The person on the line said I would have to come to a branch with certification that I was not deceased.
I have heard horror stories of this sort but never thought it would happen to me.
I wonder if it had anything to do with that MBA snauf from a couple of years ago?

OMG, Greg. But unless the Pearly Gates are a wifi hotspot, I think you're still with us. :angelic:

Seriously, did the bank rep say where this information came from? Did the SSA initiate the withdrawl or did the bank?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Oh, Greg -- that's terrible! You should check other accounts, too. Credit cards, etc. And check credit reporting agencies.

And I hope that the bank doesn't think you are dead, since they talked with you on the phone!

    EXCERPT:
What to do if you've been declared dead
To avoid the financial hardship or risk of identity theft as a result of being named to the Social Security's death list, the Identity Theft Resource Center recommends that you do the following:

First, find out who reported you as dead.

Then, get a copy of your death certificate from the county clerk's or recorder's office where the death was reported, and fill out a form to amend the certificate. The death certificate will include the name of whoever reported your death. This person is typically contacted to sign the amendment as well.

    Hi,
Thank you all for your concerns. After I posted this and realized I could nothing until Monday I went and made a few buttered rums.
I just sent an email to a contact at my bank (close friend of a friend)
to see what see makes of it. The SS office has not sent me any notification so perhaps it was just the bank. My other accounts are okay as far as I could tell.

Wow Greg, I would be downing a bottle of Kahlua had it been me.......I really hope it gets taken care of and that it was a bank error rather than a SS error. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hi Bakersgma,
Several years ago I got a diploma and college transcripts from an ivy league school with my name. It was for a MBA. It took weeks of back and forth for the school to send me a Fed Ex box to send it back. We all at the antique board at ebay had a field day. The school kept contacting me about my change of address so they could send me my diploma. It must of made the internet because an offical of the college saw it and called me herself. She was very grateful that I did not name the school. Anyway it was great fun while it lasted. After it was sent back and all was well, three weeks later, I got a letter from the school thanking me for returning it. A few days later I got a letter asking what my new address was so they could send me my diploma. I should have kept it and got a new job.

Now that you mention it, I remember that. I can't see that thread having got very interesting or far with Lithium in control.

I'll admit that at the second time around, I'd have just sent the address and accepted my diploma.

Can a legally dead person stand trial? Can they incur debts? Can they be taxed? Can they be arrested? Do they have to wear clothes to the supermarket?

On the other hand, having medical students cut bits off you might be a negative.

Wow, that's crazy, Greg. Hope you're able to resolve it quickly. What type of "certification" does the bank want? I would think showing up in person, with maybe a photo ID would be sufficient.
