    Hi,
I'm looking for some information/help on this pair of gloves.
I believe this is seal skin from the spots, with the beading I'm not sure if they would be Native. These have been worn at one time, came from a house where they have been hanging for the last 40 years, no other history on them. They are 12" x 7" across the top.
The red beads are a deeper red than what shows in the photos.
    Any information appreciated.
    thanks for looking

thanks Komokwa! Yes, I wondered about the arrows but I really don't know.
Would these be considered gauntlets rather than gloves?

Seal is shiny, and as Komo says, much greyer.

You need to contact a museum specializing in indigenous items. Even if they don't have this particular tribe represented, they usually know others. Search online.

Young roebucks have spots, but I think they are a European species.

There are many species of seal/sea lion...these look a lot like some seal items I have....or at least, I was told they were seal; what do I know......

One of my reputedly sealskin items is a large pillow-like frog, with beading spelling out "Alaska" and some decorative elements, as I recall. I think my wife has some reputedly Inuit gauntlets with beading; but when bought at auction, any tribal attribution is somewhat suspect.

fer sure...but only a few tribes ever dealt with seal.......so pointing a finger is ...at least a path forward to the truth.
I mean to say....the Sioux never had sealskin, & the Haida never even saw a buffalo !

I think the spots may indicate harbor seals, but that is a guess.

or could the the spotted seal....
The spotted seal, also known as the larga seal or largha seal, is a member of the family Phocidae, and is considered a "true seal". It inhabits ice floes and waters of the north Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has denied protection for spotted seal populations in Alaskan waters.

I forgot I had this Ookpik made of sealskin, same coarseness as the gloves - so I think they are sealskin. DSC01254.jpg DSC01255.jpg

I couldn't resist. Frankie Rodgers, from Mission BC, playing his "Ookpik Waltz."
(Sometimes recorded as "a traditional Canadian waltz."
Near and dear to my heart; my wife and I have recorded the tune, and hid little Ookpiks in various places on our CD and graphics.
