I was at the weekly flea market this morning and found this display cabinet for 150 francs, 200 with delivery. It is in pretty good shape, except for some scratches and sagging in the middle. There is some unusual hardware in it. A semi hidden fastener? I would appreciate any thoughts on the piece. My guess is that it is from the early 20th century?

While waiting for some furniture expert to weigh in I'll ask, are there any markings that might identify the maker? Where is that bit of hardware located? They may request more photos or close-ups of construction if there is any question.

I'd have guessed newer (were I guessing).

The door now on the right looks like it belongs in the center.

Photos of all hardware would be helpful, as well as photos of how the shelves attach inside, the back, the bottom, etc.

Agree with Bronwen that the door placement is off.

With info/photos currently provided, I, too, would guess newer... perhaps mid-century at oldest...

    Pretty cabinet!

I also think quite a bit newer. Probably no earlier than the 60s and possibly a decade or 2 later. More/better pics might persuade me otherwise.

    Indeed.

I don't see the sagging easily, do you mean the shelves are sagging? Even hard wood or plywood shelving will sag without weight on top of it when it reaches over 3' across. Can you flip the shelves over?

I would also guess much newer, 1960s at the oldest, same a Bluumz above.

I'd take a guess at the 70s - depending on the hinges, etc. I also agree the doors need to be put in the proper orientation.

There are no markings I can find on the back, bottom or interior top.

The hardware can be found on the bottom at the sides as well as on the sides at the top.

I should have taken a picture of the back before putting stuff in it.

    Does this look better?
The shelves are not the flattest, but I am seeing issues with the styles between the doors having about 3mm of gap. it moves freely up and down. I will need to stick a small shim in the bottom as it causes the door to bind.

Here is a picture of the hinges and the shelf supports. [IMG]

Definitely mid century or later. There is some plywood in the construction. Anyways, it passes the IKEA test. It was cheaper than anything I can find at IKEA and much better quality.

Ok, with the close ups, now I am looking at 1970s wood or later.

LOL : your "IKEA test" !!

MUCH better!!!! OK, now you're gonna kill me!!!....can you flip that second shelf, i.e. is it finished on both sides?? OR better yet, can you put THAT shelf near the bottom where it's LESS noticeable and a straight shelf where all your glassware is???? Then @Bronwen won't be so seasick!!!:):):happy::joyful: But really, the sag in the second down shelf DOES STAND OUT right there!!! It's a NICE looking cabinet!!!

Ok, the interior was likely mass manufactured to accept a different type of doors, that would open and then slide straight back into the sides of the cabinet and click into the divet of the fastener.

I'm going to go with the rest and say it was made in the 1970s. Made nicely too.

... and is that an Elijah's Cup I see in there? Do you collect Judaica? As it happens I just bought one this morning (glass and metal) ; it was in a thrift store and needed rescuing.

This one? This Kiddush cup is from our wedding. It is made by Steve Resnick in Virginia.

Nice! I'm known for rehoming Judaica, especially when a local synagogue has their annual (normally) rummage sale.
