Featured Mystery dresser from a relatives dark cluttered shed

Hey all, new to this forum but recommended by a few folks. Here’s the piece, no info other than what the pictures tell. Sitting for quite a long while under all sorts of clutter and accumulated stuff. Had an old sale tag in the Top drawer, hard to make out. Wife loves it, I’m not sold on it yet. Thanks for any suggestions or ideas on maker, age, value.

 

Looks like a piece of 1880-1900 golden oak,but Ive never seen brasses like that on one before . I also dont understand the top ! Is there a piece missing,or is it upside down ?

Agree with johnny, turn of the century oak. But I'm not 100% sure it is American.

@johnnycb09 I think the piece sitting on top is upside down.
More like this - only it has cupboards up top.

I have one with cupboards up top - it's marked France.

Ya...that makes 2 of us....
the brass is over the top...& looks un-original..
the whole thing looks like it needs lots of TLC ....
I'm not even sure the top and bottom go together

 

Looks way more natural and matches better with a 180 flip.

 

I am totally confused. . .from the first set of pictures you posted you show these two photos of a chest/dresser with a 'top' plunked on it. They aren't the same 'top'.

Ok, komokwa, 2 extra boards, which were flipped 180 degrees in the most recent picture posted, AND the top is sitting upside down also? Then it is also missing the top, decorative rail AND it is a sideboard and not a dresser?

Bits & bobs put together willy-nilly. Like looking through a photo album where half the pictures are upside down.

 

Agree with the 1900 date and possibly a tad earlier. Think American and as made, except the round knobs. Think this was a higher end piece, as the strap hinge embellishments and Louis Sullivanesque carvings are not often seen. Of course, the top is shown upside down and it is a buffet with hutch.

Ok, assembled per the advice of the forum. Thanks for the input. Anyone have an estimate of value for a piece like this?

 

The casters say Evansville, Indiana, so I'll assume that you're in the Midwestern U.S.

This is quite a rather high-end piece, ca. 1890-1910, oak as noted above. the brass mounts are stylish and very unusual. In my part of the U.S. Midwest I'd expect to see this go for somewhere around $300-$400, depending on the day. It's a beauty, and if it were mine I'd find some way to keep it.

 

Value seems about right but maybe bumped up for the right market. If selling, I would replace those knobs with some smaller metal pulls.

 

It certainly is an unusual design.
Whether you sell it or keep it, you would do well to wipe it down with Howard's Restor-A-Finish. Dark Oak is probably too dark and light oak will be too light.

Maybe cherry or mahogany would work - then use Howard's Feed N Wax.
