Hanging woven reed basket/bowl painted inside and out.

This had an old piece of cotton rope looped through the two handle/loops ...but i took it off because it was falling apart. I'm assuming this was meant to hang? I know less about this kind of thing - baskets/weaving than I do most stuff - which is just about nothing. The only non-painted parts are the loops/handles on the outside. The inside is painted or dyed black, and the outside painted red with a large floral design on the bottom. It's about 12 inches in diameter and about 3-4 inches deep. Can anyone tell me where this was made and how old it might be? Thanks once again!

To me it looks like the lid to something such as a sewing basket, etc.

 

That makes a lot of sense - now that you said it - I can see it!

Which of course, my very Anglo female ancestors would have used as a sewing basket................and considered it a job well done, because its original purpose had to be HEATHEN, right???

 

not if it was used.......then it would stink of food......but new.....ya why not....it's got storage capacity !!
