Hi silver guys, I was trying to decide where to ask about this and thought the silver board may be the place.

This is an engraved glass decanter with an 800 silver collar. I Googled the silver mark and all I can come up with is it may be Italian. That may be enough but I thought I would check with you to see if I was missing something.

It has nice engraving, there are a few nibbles on the edges but for $1 I couldn't pass it up! The collar looked silver plate because it was almost black when I bought it, but once I polished it I saw the 800 mark :)

    It is lovely.

Just curious but . . . how large (circumference) is it around the bottom and how tall is it not including the stopper? Do you know the "capacity" of the bottle? ;)

    CRAP, I forgot measurements, sorry!

12" tall with stopper, 8-7/8" tall without the stopper, 5-1/2 wide across the bottom, 3-1/4" deed across the bottom. I have not checked the volume but I can do that, will be back in a few minutes.

Baker, yes $1, how could I pass it up!!!

OK, I filled it up to the bottom of the silver collar, it is just about 3 cups or 700ml :)

Marie Forjan, thank you for the measurements.

I second Johnnycb's "lovely thing" and multiply it by 10. ;)

For a buck? How was it still sitting there when you found it?!?! The other shoppers must have been blind!

I found something that referenced "vm" hallmark as the duchy of savoy during the 19th century ,another referenced it as an unknown maker, but both think Italy.

I would guess mid to late 1800s.

The bottle may prove to be Italian, but the engraving looks like Egermann style.

    Lovely piece.

The engraving absoutely looks Bohemian or possibly Bavarian, rather than Italian. Very good find!
