I see lots of Oriental pieces heavily damaged, yet at some stage someone has gone to the trouble to attempt some sort of repair.

Any thoughts on this? Why not just dispose of?

Is it the mystique of ancient pieces and a belief of value?

Possibly repaired because of sentimental value. Some people specifically collect broken and stapled repaired ceramics.

Staple repairs are a good thing; it guarantees the item is either genuine or one heckuvan old copy. It also means somebody cared; I value the latter myself. Sometimes a staple repair cost more than the item is worth. It may have been Grandma's favorite vase, and the value was always more sentimental than Euros or dollars.
