I found this beautiful inkwell. I know very little about silver marks. I know the lion means it is English, but that is all I know. Can anyone figure out the place and or date of this inkwell? Thank you so much1 IMG_4179.JPG IMG_4180.JPG IMG_4181.JPG IMG_4182.JPG IMG_4183.JPG

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@Bakersgma, @Ownedbybear, @say_it_slowly ??? I enlarged the marks on the rim of that VERY lovely inkwell....but can see anyway that I believe they are Crown, Don't Know, Shield, and letter 'g'. The marks under the lid have an awful lot of reflection, but MAYBE a small 't', Left facing Lion again, and a 'g' again ......others are MUCH better at dating than I am, for SURE!!!!

That is not a English crown town mark on the left. May be part of a worn maker's mark. Not sure.

The lion passant you know. The mark in the shield is the leopard head for London. The g for the date.

Thank you. Here are a couple more photos that may be better. So the g mark dates it to 1902? Sorry, I am new at this. IMG_4189.JPG IMG_4190 (1).JPG

I believe the item was made (sponsored if we are going to be precise about terms) by William Hutton and Sons Limited of Faringdon Road, London.

Information courtesy of www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk. (I would post a screenshot of the relevant entry but the Forum software is not cooperating right now.).

Edit: Screenshot is posted in a separate reply below.

There is a long entry on the firm in Fallon: Marks of London Goldsmiths and Silversmiths 1837-1914. It was established by William Carr Hutton in 1872 and continued to exist until its goodwill was transferred to James Dixon and Sons in 1930. One of the descendants of the founder attained a Phd in Electrometallurgy, eventually becoming a Professor of Metallurgy at Cambridge University, where he researched methods of preventing silver from tarnishing. He also became eventually Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Company, London and died age 94 in 1970!
