I'm trying to determine whether I might have a Thomas Day Dresser. I bought this from a lady in her 80s who said it was her great grandfathers. There are no markings or stamps on this piece. Which I read was common in Thomas day pieces. If anyone out there has some feed back that would be great.

I have no clue - just wanted to say that I am green with envy - what a lovely piece!

Edited to add: I believe that it is from the American Empire period, but maybe that is A) wrong, or B) something you already knew!

    Lovely.
I'd put the date at mid to late 1800s.

It could be, you have a late classical dresser. Where are you located? where was dresser found? Thomas Day was a free black man who operated the largest furniture shop in NC in the middle of the 19th century. Pic below is a Day dresser in NC History Museum.

"In the Manner of" Thomas Day.

Yeah, "in the manner of" or "attributed to" usually brings down the sale price quite a bit.

What makes you think this is a Day piece? To my eye, it looks like a typical east coast late classical period dresser. The only thing quirky enough to indicate Day might be those mirror supports.

Yeah, agrees with Brad, those mirror supports caught my eye as well. Which is why it's important where dresser was found, any history you have on it. Late Classical was made all over the eastern seaboard, it's mostly machine made and literally millions of pieces were produced. So to even get to "attributed", you need some evidence that it was built in north carolina.

The only reason why I thought was Thomas day was mirror supports as well. The history I have on it was handed down to lady I bought it from by her great grandparents. She said the peice was given to her great grandparents from there best friends who moved and brought the piece back with them from Europe. The lady I bought it from was in her eighties. Bought I suppose if it did come from Europe it would not likely be a thomas day piece.

Hi I picked up dresser from a elderly lady in her 80s who said the dresser was her great grandparents. The dresser was given to her grandparents by there friends who brought it back with them from Europe when they moved to the east coast. So I suppose if it were from Europe it would not likely be a Thomas day piece.

Well, i do not think your piece is european, it looks as american as apple pie so someones story here isn't adding up. That happens though over time, people forget, they misremember and before you know it, the story is all balled up.
The secondary wood on drawer side looks like poplar & if that is correct, your dresser is american.

Which brings us back to where i am located vis a vis old furniture, construction details. If your dresser had some/any connection to north carolina, it would be worth having someone familiar with Day's work examine it to determine if the construction details would allow attribution.
Otherwise, you have a very nice condition late classical dresser :)

What's the best way to find someone familiar with Tom Day? I have a wardrobe of his with original bill of sale.
