IMG_0893.JPG IMG_0895.JPG I bought a Royal Albert Bone China tea plate with this tea cup plastic wrapped to the top, I could not see cups bottom until a moment ago when I decided to unwrap it, there is gold paint writing looking quite ameteur(from a young child?) saying
    "M R. B 1891" apparently
Haviland & Co.... Limoges, according to internet. I do believe this 1891 datewas a year this piece was in existence. Seems written by a child or individual with unsteady / poor handwriting. I would be elated to know I inadvertently bought a genuinely 100+ year old antique. Seems definitely hand painted. Quite nicely actually. Your Thoughts and opinions?

It is a Haviland Limoges porcelain teacup, and I believe the CFH/GDM mark does date this to around that time (1891) plus you have someone's intials there with a date - I'm assuming whoever decorated the cup. (I could be wrong about that part).

    Useful reference for Haviland:

Very good I appears the tea cup is of 1882 manufacture. As you said fitting with the date in gold paint on bottom. Now I'm curious about value... I see haviland items going for 7$ to $90+ but this to me is a unique case. Being hand painted& dated/initialed. I'll hold onto it either way :)

    toomanytocount Boredom is a sin.

This is a blank that was hand decorated by a hobbyist, there were many groups of women who gathered and enjoyed this past time together, end of 19th to early 20th century. Something acceptable for women to do out of the house.....lol
I collected fine hand painted large porcelain mugs and tankards for a while, some dated, some not, most with initials of amateur artists, some with original marks like Limoges etc. You can look this up.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Here's an article I just found about the china painting hobby that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Informative!

I have a lovely hand-painted plate with flowers and gilding that my aunt made in the early 1900s. It's still a nice piece.

Here are two mugs which are blank porcelain and painted with early 20th century decors, you can see it's not 100% perfect results with the motifs, but still lovely and interesting. The second one is a Willett blank mug or tankard. They are about 5 and 6 inches high.

Hi, Toomany... I love those mugs, however imperfect they may be! I have a small collection of American Belleek, all of it similarly hand-painted (mostly CAC/Lenox, but some Willets, as well.)
