Found this at my local goodwill, tests as silver but am curious as to the chop marks. Thanks BTW it's 4 1/4" across and 2 " high and weighs 73 grams all for $1.18. DSCN4093.JPG DSCN4094.JPG DSCN4095.JPG DSCN4096.JPG Tue Aug 01 16-32-53.jpg Tue Aug 01 16-34-26.jpg

Japanese sterling silver sake cup with a spring motif of cherry tree blossoms. Wonderful!

I would. You know you can easily fix the base, silver is soft and pliable, pair of plyers over a piece of fabric for no scratches, you could gently press the bottom rim back straight as it was. Maybe I should do it? ;)

Working on it, got most of the dents out and the base straighter now to work on the name engraving. When I'm done I will post another picture. Just as a bit of info I use steel ball bearings and a super strong magnet to smooth the dents, works and prevents marring of the surface.:cigar:

Gosh, never heard of that, would like to see it again once done. You should do a Utube demonstration video. Serious. :joyful:

The cherry blossoms and lettering appear to have been chased and not engraved. The blossoms are better than the lettering, but both are lacking.

A cute cup. I would say chased as well.
As Bakers said, the mark is an indication it is silver. It is not a specific maker's mark.

Did what I could, don't have the tools to go any farther with it but it polished up nice and will go well with my hoard. Couldn't do anything with the names as they are done with a tiny punch and the flowers appear to be cut into the surface.

Engraving removes metal and chasing compresses the metal,if you see the outside design on the inside it has been chased. The cup also looks like it was spun on a lathe type machine and not handmade.

hi coreya i like your cup thought i would show you a cup i picked up. was told It is a Trophy Cup for the winner of the 7th national cotton textiles competition
Is around 250mm wide and 150mm high. Is not metallic and is a plated material of some sort it has a copper band at top with brass handles. Not sure on the symbol on front looks like brass but is a different finish to me. Googled the comps but found nothing if anyone has heard of it appreciate any info cheers chris View attachment 84857 View attachment 84858 View attachment 84859 View attachment 84857 View attachment 84858 View attachment 84859 View attachment 84857 View attachment 84858 View attachment 84859

chris, welcome to the boards, just a suggestion if I may. Open a new thread on this and include pictures of the base and any marks on the cup. You will get a much better response that way rather than having it buried in an unrelated post. You say it is not metallic but has brass handles? If not silver perhaps post it in metalware section.
