Mr Peanut's big !!!

 

Pretty excited, I found this raven carving last month on a local online flea market, it looked art deco to me and the stamp on the bottom had an antiquated German writing of AG (A.G.) on it, so I travelled to Brienz recently and they said that it was made around 1940, also apparently worth ten times of what I paid ($30)...to certain people at least


Also visited the local woodcarving museum in Brienz, was a lovely place

Wanted to buy something newer from the store above but their prices are insane, got this guy in a gallery nearby instead...oak carving of a Swiss mercenary, around 1880-90

 

Call me uneducated, but I prefer the bird.

 

Here is some of what I picked up over the last little while, some you have seen as I've asked questions about them
Sterling cream & sugar, just marked sterling weighted, Gorham ladle/spoon, maybe for berries and the sterling ring box made by Sturdy and sons, thanks for the id Dragonflywink, a Rafael triple strand double pendant necklace (that is a mouthful), native carved pin, buffalo bone pendants/necklace and the sweet painted porcelain brooch, a Whiting & Davis gold mesh bib necklace, a metal purse, no marks, not sure if silver-plate or just some sort of tin/ metal, Franz porcelain Peacock cup and saucer, a tin/metal bracelet with a native design, signed Nuri, will have to ask about it, 'Sky Toss' by Irene Klar and my favourite piece, a little Eskimo Billiken

Hello all,
didn't poste for a long time.
So here I am with a question.
Fond this leather portofolio, embroid with flowers, initials and a coat of arms.
With the help of different fora, I managed to find out the map belonged to the consul of New Grenade, in Antwerp.
New Grenade was a country that only lasted for some 20 years in the mid 19 th century, north of south Amerika.
Also found out that the consul was, a general in the Garde Civique (dad's army) and a shipowner and trader. His name was Louis David Verbist.
The nobility crown has little to do, because I could not find his name on the list of the Belgian nobility.




So my question is how do you call such a map?
Does it have a specific name.
Just like in the ovale office you see from time to time such map's holding official papers to be signed.
And during lots of other ceremonial or official hapenings...

Your Nueva Granada item appears to be a correspondence folder. I see (in French) Lettres a repondre, Lettres répondues and Notes diverses as well as the days of the week. A Google Images search will bring up other examples. Some of them can be quite grand, depending on the desk. Here's a Russian one made of malachite.

Yours is a fascinating item, Kristiaan. The Republic of Nueva Granada was so short lived. Can't imagine many items remain that were associated with it. The country's coat of arms is interesting too. It includes a pomegranate which is, of course granada in Spanish and the Phrygian cap which symbolizes liberty. It is used in American patriotic imagery too. Here's Lady Liberty.

it is fascinating indeed!
Got it last friday and it kept me going all WE long.
We where at a party last night and I couldn't wait to get home in order to continue the research.

Contacted the Museum of Columbia, too.
Would like to know more about the man, the country he represented, etc...
