Rubies and sapphires are aluminum oxide (corundum).

There is a chemical means of refining aluminum and that is what was first discovered. It was difficult and produced very small amounts of the metal, which is why it was considered precious. Napoleon III was given a baby rattle made of aluminum. Using electricity was what made aluminum production commercial, but it takes a lot of electricity. Quebec used to be a major producer (probably still is) just because of abundant electrical generation.

Wendell august also made their products out of bronze and silver. I've had a couple of the bronze items, but never the aluminum or silver.

I believe the link between Alzheimer's and aluminum has been discounted.

I've always wanted a piece of Wendell August sterling. I have yet to get lucky on that bucket list piece though I've had quite a few in both Aluminum and Bronze, even copper. They're still in biz making beautifully designed and crafted metalwork to this day.

I think aluminum is making a comeback. People are discovering the classic pieces go with modern décor. My son keeps this on the kitchen island with fruit in it and he gets a lot of compliments.

    Hi Bev,
You look just like a girl I dated in 1964. Her name was Judy Todd. What memories pop up.
