Can you identify the wood and time period in this furniture suite?

My uncle purchased this furniture from a neighbor in 1986; he was told it was 100 years old then. The suite consists of a long dresser with a mirror, the highboy pictured, a desk/vanity type piece with a curved seat bench, the headboard, and a nightstand, all matching.

The grain of the wood has always fascinated me and I find the entire set big and beautiful. Can you tell me what type of wood this is? When do you think it was made? Does it have a particular style?

    Thanks! furn 1.jpg furn 2.jpg furn 4.jpg furn 5.jpg furn headboard.jpg furn 6.jpg

Burl walnut circa 1930. Depression era traditional revival furniture. Borrows from various styles to create an overall traditional look with little historical precedence. Looks to be in beautiful condition.

At least whoever sleeps in this bed, sleeps with a guardian angel.

Kay's Furniture, of Yonkers, NY, was founded in 1926, and remained in business until 1967.

Marko, NOW I see this thread! I replied over in the FINDS thread. I'm just going to copy it here:

That decal on the back of your uncle's pieces shows a Warburton Ave address:

The Kay family apparently opened their furniture store at 24-26 Warburton Ave in Yonkers in July of 1927. By the end of February, 1931, Kay Furniture had moved to 24 Main Street. They later expanded into 22 Main Street, as well. The Main Street store closed in 1967.

With that address on the decal, your uncle's furniture may be older than originally thought. The company was only at that address from 1927 to 1931.

There are some great old photos, ads, and info about Kay Furniture in Yonkers here:
