    Hi,
I'm not normally an art glass collector but won the candle holder attached in a recent estate sale auction where it caught my eye. The piece belonged to a very prominent collector of automobilia and historic memorabilia.

The story in the very limited catalog description is that this piece is by an early 20th century Belgian artist and was given as a gift to General George S Patton in 1944 by a Belgian dignitary. I don't have any documentation on this and don't think there will be a way to prove that connection (I always take stories like this with a grain of salt)

The piece itself is very heavy (just under 5 lbs) and around 4 1/2" tall - it looks to be very high quality to my untrained eye. It is signed on the bottom but I can't make out the signature - very difficult to read or photograph.

Any insight from art glass experts would be greatly appreciated! 015FEC1F-A566-41CA-AC74-C2A16E121BE6_1_105_c.jpeg 18D64915-AF40-4457-B654-D6FD917EADA1_1_105_c.jpeg 933F28C7-9284-4AE8-B090-DF3769A03253_1_105_c.jpeg D17905A5-46FE-452D-8649-7F6BDD68F6F5_1_105_c.jpeg EEC03582-0A35-4CFA-B216-B80BA3459A15_1_105_c.jpeg

I used baking soda and was able to get a slightly clearer view of the signature - still not able to read it though. Hope this helps identify the artist. IMG_9487.JPG

Are you sure it is a candle holder?

good grief. This shows how lazy and incompetent auction houses can be. It's nothing like Belgian glass, not in any early 20th style either. It is indeed Stromberg. And a very lovely lump, too. I need to go check but it looks post WW2.

Thank you so much everyone!! I really appreciate all your help and glad to know it's a vase

I'm still thrilled with this buy as I was the only bidder at the low opening bid (worth taking a chance outside my expertise). I did notice many auction house errors / discrepancies in the automotive items and was definitely suspicious of the write up as a result. I put no value to the supposed Patton connection as I knew that would be impossible to verify, even if this piece was pre WW2

$50 usd winning bid plus buyer premiums, taxes / duty etc (well under $100 total). I won several other items in the auction (automotive art and badges) so shipping on this was combined.

Nice link! And a piece with a 2nd color like the OP's would even have more value I would think. Gorgeous glass.
