My icon box is still available (though a tad bit older so perhaps not as exciting as Ruth LOL) Good gravy you should see the 1705 bench I have....all of the charm of Ruth!

I didn't buy a German kitchen queen about thirty years ago. All fitted out with enamel bits and bobs labeled in German. I still regret not owning that piece.

But I do have my 1590's bible box so I'm feeling a bit better LOL

Yeah, but is it american? BAM! I admit it, i have this HORRIBLE chauvinism towards american pieces, i have softened a bit as the years roll on, i now have a couple pieces of english furniture but, back in the day, if it wasn't american, i was totally not interested.
Sorry about your kitchen queen, i know exactly how you feel!

The paper mache lion just "got away" from me but I did get to own it for a bit. He's four feet long to give you an idea of what a beast he is. I am actually going to miss him being in my life!

Dawn, I LOVE him! I would get rid of a piece of furniture, if I had to, in order to give him enough space! :cat:

A lion huh, well, you know, whatever trips your trigger! Still, i am sticking with ruth whose allure has grown to mythical proportions over the years probably because i failed to acquire it.
Although these early boxes are referred to as "bible boxes" today, it is doubtful that's what they were used for, at least in america. Although no one knows exactly their purpose, i suspect many of these boxes were used to store ones personal items, kind of a private space in an era when private bedrooms were rare.

I used to agonize over a keris that had supposedly belonged to my family. It was already sold when I found out about it. Last year someone asked about the whereabouts of this keris (no one knew). He included a picture and I saw the coat of arms was that of the neighbouring kingdom. Distant relatives, but not the right ones. The winged horse on the right is one of the symbols of my family, so I understand the confusion:

Dawn, your lion reminded me of a photo that actually does have a family connection, a regent/prince of Bangkalan, Madura, Indonesia:

Document box is a more common name as well. In a day when life was cold and damp and yes, no personal space, a place to keep documents was important!

OMG!!!! They could have been made by the same person! Detail and that handsome face! I am going to keep that picture to remember my guy by :)

He went to an art collector who will show him to his best advantage which is lovely.

This happens to me all the time. All the time. I have many "one that got away" stories, at least three or four bad ones, with painful memories, every year. Usually as a result of underbidding, hesitation, a fleeting period of miserliness, or a fear of whatever I've set my sights on not being authentic in some way. I don't want to go into details about all the pieces, but each one of them stings when thought of.

Yep, i hear you, painful memories. I doubt i'll ever get over that wood box, i knew exactly what it was, bid twice the high estimate & STILL LOST!
