What is the age on this do you think?
    My guess was 1920s. Heavy.

Nice stand, Gato. I would be inclined to put it the other way around though.

Also called a fern stand. Certainly could be used for a small sculpture/bust too.

Hi BronwynI did play with that but I need a smaller bust as the stand is slightly wobbly. I'm sure I can find a fern somewhere

No. the male pieces on either end of the midsection are not very long. But it will hold a palm ok.

It's very handsome and I'd be happy with a palm/fern on it but I'd worry with something of value like your bust. (At least in my house.) Sorry I don't know how to guess the age.

These are normally called a Torchere, originally candle stands in Georgian period, Victorian period for oil lamps, etc but but in mid-late Victorian times with the advent of gas lighting and electric lighting they fell out of use and were used as plant stands. This one certainly has a late Victorian look with the fluted central column but the design doesn't look English. Looks mahogany and a classic wood of the period.

Could it be Australian and that's why it doesn't look English? I bought it in Australia where i live.
