Yes it is. But thank goodness we have collectors like yourself to preserve this heritage.
This is what the beaded panels look like before they are mounted on the slippers:

AJ you flatter me! I knew NOTHING about this until maybe 5 years ago?

When my grandmother died, my dad got all nostalgic and started talking about how grandma came from this amazing, rich, intricate culture - something called the 'Peranakan'.

I knew NOTHING about this. Gran never told me, and I never thought to ask. After doing some initial research, I started going to museums and asking relatives and scrounging photographs and antiques and everything I could find.

I wouldn't call myself an expert on the Peranakan, but suffice to say I am extremely passionate about them and the culture. My grandmother's entire family was Perankan. In fact I ony found out this week that my great-grandfather (grandma's father), was a Peranakan goldsmith!

It was just a couple of lines on her death certificate...

    PARENTS:

FU Tai Keng / FU Ah Hiong (Nee 'Leong')

    OCCUPATIONS:

    GOLDSMITH / Housewife.

I have a freaking GOLDSMITH in my family! I was in shock!

We have prints of them and we have digital copies. Gotta get around to framing them all and hanging them up and stuff. I've only done a few so far.
