I have this silhouette portrait that is cut out black paper on white. It has a stamp that read F Ward and a date of 1731. This inscription was read that under a 10x magnifier.
I am intrigued what the date 1731 means. I searched the subject of silhouette portrait art and It says it traces to mid-18th century which is after this date. Would that be the birthday of the subject in this silhouette portrait? or could it be the date that it was made? Did they have such stamps during those early times?
    It's oval with dimensions: 6 1/2" L and 4 1/2" W

I suspect that 7 is actually a 9. These were quite popular around that time frame.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but it's certainly not 18th century.
Judging by the fashion I believe 1930s or so. (If it's even real and not just a print that came with the frame)

    In this article:
    https://legacy.lib.utexas.edu/taro/aushc/00515/00515-P.html

it says, "For a short time the company was known as Jordan-Ellison Company before becoming Ellison Photo Company around 1932."

That little foil stamp of Jordan-Ellison puts this right in that time period of the framing of this little silhouette.

Yes, definitely 1930s. And very sweet.

That date, of course, makes it vintage and not antique.

You could get real ones cut on the Boardwalk as souvenirs, back in the 20s. I have a pair done of my grandparents.
