Does this look like anything to anyone? Real embroidery, looks like a carved crane as the back. Very short chair which I think was called a dressing chair?

Appears to be needlepoint, not embroidery, and does look contemporary to chair.

I don't know about some dressing chairs but I believe nursing chairs are often short.

I don't know what you would call a short back chair but it is a circa 1890 aesthetic movement piece in walnut.

It would fit under a dressing table too. Nice piece.

My daughter has my mother's lady's desk and it has a short backed chair. I don't know if that's what it's actually called, but it's a small desk with two small drawers on either side. No mirror or indication it had a mirror.

This desk il_570xN.1165067164_m2bp.jpg is more ornate, but the chair looks like this one and the desk is flat with the two drawers on either side of a knee hole.

Maybe I misunderstood about the chair. I was thinking short chair meant with short legs.:wideyed: If it's short back then maybe not a nursing chair.

It's hard to tell from this angle on the photo. I thought you meant short back.

A better picture showing the whole chair should sort this out. I thought short legs too and then Brad went to short back. I'm confused, although that carving is beautiful!

    OT WARNING............

What was the design inspiration for the low back or even backless seating at a dressing table/vanity? Anyone?

Once madam stood up, she could use the mirror to adjust the waist/bodice of her ensemble without having to shove the seat out of the way..............and more importantly, it allowed her dresser/maid better access to her hair and shoulders with less interference.

another bit of useless trivia I learned from meine Mutter...........

Think that another term is "slipper chair"."

I believe that a slipper chair is fully upholstered and while it is not high backed, it is usually a bit higher than this example. More commonly in an arrangement than used to pull about on a regular basis.
