    Hello again,
Just curious, what is this style of DSCN6664.JPG spoon called or what is its purpose? I haven't found anything like it so far and thought that someone here might be able to save me some time?
    Is it the original "spork"?
Although it is bent up, it is approx. 5 1/2", sterling, and called "COLONIAL SHELL" which I think I found to have been made in 1941[?].
IF it is something falirly unusual, can it be straightened or is it just scrap silver?
Thanks again for your time and any help,
    Karl.

We need to see any markings on the back of it. This would tell us if it is sterling, silverplate or something like stainless steel or pewter. Also markings would tell us the maker. If we knew the maker, we could definitely ID the pattern and a possible time frame. Can you post a pic of the back along with a close-up of any marks.

Off the top of my head, the shape of this piece looks like the fork of a salad service set. Examples:

As to pattern being "Colonial Shell," does it say so on the back? Several types of shell patterns were made by several different companies. This colonial shell looks like a stylized shell.

At 5 1/2", I'd say it's an ice cream fork. (I have a full set!)

Looks like International's 'Colonial Shell', at that size and shape, would most likely be an ice cream fork...

Its sterling and I doubt it is large enough to be a salad fork. Ice cream spoon? Wonder what are the tines are DSCN6665.JPG for? Never heard of it but it looks similar. Sounds good to me. Here is a pict. of the reverse and thanks again for the info.

The functional intent of the ice cream "fork" is for the dainty eating of "frozen desserts" at a formally set table. Ever have an "ice cream cake?" There are also "ice cream knives" for the division of individual slices of said cake.

The Victorians had special implements for everything!

I would also think that since ice cream was homemade at that time there would be chunks of real fruit & it may not have been as smooth as the stuff we eat now.

    Hi,
We did not have sugar cones or cake cones. We had a heavy white bowl brimming with home made ice cream made with our own fresh peaches. Heavy with sugar and chunks in the ice cream. The now a days peaches have no taste not like the old fashion ones we had. Still drooling.
