Hi,
My old neighbor used to grow wonderful berries. She was old but always covered her bushes with sheer curtains, stopped the birds and sometimes the squirrels.

My other Gram used to make them also. I remember them dripping with butter and strawberry jam. I had a real sweet tooth as a kid. I loved strawberry jam on pancakes and waffles also. Thanks for the memories.

Nothing stops squirrels but BB guns and hungry bobcats. And a resident hawk. A hawk with babies to feed slows up the action quickly.

 

Thursday, Friday and Saturday was many miles for little of nothing.

Two sales showed up for Monday. Unheard of.

The first one I bought three baggies of junk drawer type bits and bobs just because they were cheap. Turned out to be almost all junk except this pendant marked 14K.

The next one was goofy stuff for the most part but I found this old padlock for a buck.

Took me an hour or so to figure out the combination.

 

funny.....i was looking at locks like that this week on line.......coinkydink!

 

Not my find, but the auction last night included a pair of Saudi gold cufflinks, 18ct, which went for rather more than £200. My friend picked the things up at a car boot for a quid!

 

Someone a while ago mentioned Endre Szasz, a Hungarian artist who lived in Toronto in the ‘70s. These are reproductions I purchased back then at the gallery that represented him. Sooo.... hardly new finds. I believe he worked as much with his fingers as with brushes.

I went to the gallery after seeing a newspaper write-up about him. These reproductions are vintage but worth very little. I like them anyhow. Steampunk… decades before the term was coined.

A propos of nothing at all: the Gallery was on Rexdale Blvd. in Toronto, down the road from the Woodbine horseracing track. As I recall, I went from the gallery to the track where the Queen’s Plate, one of Canada’s biggest racing events, was being held. Standing by the paddock as the jockeys walked their mounts, someone called out to one of the best known, Avelino Gomez, “How you gonna do?” Gomez, who had won 4 previous Queen’s plates, smiled, waved back and said “Number 5!” Sure enough, his horse ran fifth.

 

I had 3 huge blueberry bushes, taller than me, that produced huge blueberries. I had fine black nets over them.

 

Both great especially the lock!!!!

My wife has planted gooseberries.....now we have to figure out what to do with them.
Jam? Sweet like on toast, or savory like with ham?
What else can you do with them, they are tart. And we already have a ton of jam, both sweet and savory....and chutney, and curd.....lemon, plum, pear, raspberry, blueberry, apple, fig.....yikes.

 

UH OH!!!!!
I see a canning opportunity fight coming...

 

What variety are they? Gooseberries make a wonderful fool, but you can also cook the tart ones with fattier meats like duck and pork. And hams, too.

 

Never had gooseberries. Here in CT it is next to impossible to find fresh currants; so now when I inquire about currants, I'll ask about gooseberries to.

When I was a kid my mother grew all kinds of berries (but not gooseberries).

 

I'm not sure...they are whitish, translucent when ripe; and very small; only about twice as big as a BB. More tart than lemons, such that you sure wouldn't want to eat a handful raw.

I don't do jewelry but for some reason I started looking around in the jewelry cabinets in the thrifts that I frequent lately, found these over the last couple weeks:

~

1. Long white/cream agate bead necklace - about 36" - no clasp.

2. Agate / tiger eye / jasper / goldstone? necklace about 18" long - clasp is marked 925.

3. Millefiori? glass bead necklace - about 18" - clasp marked 925.

4. White / pink floral japanese glass bead necklace - clasp marked Japan - looks older.

5. Scarab/ white bead necklace - the scarabs appear to be actual stone but I think this was strung together by someone at home - the necklace wire is poorly done.

Anyhow it's been fun poking around in the jewelry bins
