Thanks everyone! Yeah, it's the 3rd of July but close enough as most are taking 3 day holiday today!
I call this chest the "bird" chest, there are aprox 20 known to exist, most in museums.Frances Safford, retired curator at the Met did a study of these chests in her wonderful book 1. Early Colonial Period: The 17th Century & William & Mary Styles.
There is only 1 chest extant with it's original paint intact, at the Brooklyn Museum

I would bet that would change if you saw it in person, it's hard to convey the presence of pieces this old in a photo alone, the fact that any survive at all is incredible and survive with original paint? kind of a miracle. A lot of stuff happens over the course of 300+ years, i am honored to look after the one i have, if only for a little while.

    Hi James,
I did see it in person. I used to live in Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn. It was nice but flat in person. I guess I used to the things in the Met that really shone. The Brooklyn Museum has the largest Egyptian collection outside the one in Cairo. I used to spend many an hour there. Yours has more life in it. It is really beautiful. I guess growing up in Pennsylvania with all the Amish painted furniture spoiled me.

Oh wow, cool beans! The Met has a bird chest as well from the Bowles collection that was donated in the 1920s. In Bowles notes on the chest he referred to "bird decorations" on his chest but unfortunately the Met refinished it and so, that was THAT! Here is a pic of Bowles bird chest, sans birds! Hi Kot,
Put up your dukes!! Please do not say anything bad about the MET!!!! They saved me many a time with the church fire. The only thing I will say against the Met is that they are too far away now.
