I bought these at an estate sale. The cups and the bottle/vase were sitting beside each other. i had originally thought that this was a set, but now I'm not so sure and wonder if it's a "marriage" of sorts. Plus, I can't tell if they are Japanese, Chinese, or a combination of both somehow. If it's a set, is it for sake, wine or tea? thanks

The bottle/vase has fine a fine crackle effect.

The fine crackle is called crazing. It's not really crackle and is considered a flaw, though how important that may be I don't know.

Yeah, I know. Some porcelain is more prone to that kind of thing than others. I thought maybe it would help give a clue as to its origins. Any ideas? :penguin:

The patterns don't match, do they? Some people just like blue and white. If the cups are tiny, they're for sake. The other thing looks like a vase.

That's what I think....they don't match, and it looks less like an actual bottle and more like a bottle-form vase. Whether it's Japanese or Chinese, I can't work out just yet. I feel like it's at least 19th century, though.

Looks like a Japanese bottle vase to me.

Thanks, I was leaning toward Japanese as well, but can't really say why that is. Maybe the simplicity of the decoration...maybe Chinese would have more decoration. I don't know.
