Doulton Burslem Marks

Picked up this Doulton Burslem pitcher today and I was wondering about the marks. I figured out the Doulton mark but do the numbers and letters in red have any meaning?

Yes.
The numbers are either the blank number for the shape of the pitcher, or the number for the floral pattern.
I'm going to guess it is the floral pattern.

One letter may be for the painter, the other might be the year.

You would have to look at Royal Doulton references to see what is what.

@say_it_slowly may have a book with the correct info.

I think the only resource I have for Doulton is Godden's and while he shows some artist marks this one isn't included.

sis, that's a Lambeth mark on that site, not a Burslem one.

 

Not sure I see where it mentions that but it shows a James Cruickshank mark that someone mentioned it in a listing Janet found. Do you know it?

I know that site very well, they're all Lambeth marks. it's very misleading in the sense that it doesn't make that clear on each page. It also gets a fair bit of the history wrong, especially with the constant references to "Royal". The best reference work, which I own, is a marvellous book called the Doulton Lambeth Wares. It's scholarly and very well researched indeed.

Cruickshank was a noted and superb Lambeth artist, not a Burslem one. The Burslem factory used much more Staffordshire conventional markings, painted pattern numbers and piecework marks, such as are on this piece. If you do get artists' signatures on Burslem of the period, they are usually in the body of the art.

Lambeth was very proud of its artists and decorators, and carefully identified them. You can pin point Lambeth much better. And Cruickshank was a better artist than whoever did this one - he did a great deal of portrait work. I've just done some googling and I honestly despair. There's work of his out there, which is LAMBETH FAIENCE and they're describing as Burslem! He worked at Lambeth and did exhibition pieces, too. 1880 to 87.

Good information OBB, are there any online sites that might identify Burslem artists correctly such as this one? The internet is great, except when it's not.

I imagine someone has published a book or two that might be helpful but completely out of my area so don't have one.

 

I've not found a decent online resource for Burslem. The problem is that the vast majority of decorator and piece work marks for ANY Staffordshire factory simply aren't known. And many others: Worcester, for example, is anonymous unless it's one of the great painters who actually signed, like Harry Stinson - and even then, he's often identified by style. Doulton Lambeth are unique in that it's possible to identify designer, decorator, assistant and more. It's one of the many reasons I love the stuff.
